Sony Ericsson Unleashes High-End Powerphone
In the ad infinitum rollout of smartphones, a new one has just hit the streets in the form of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2. Don’t get it confused with the new Nokias (N97 and X-series) or the brand new high-end HTC Touch 2. This new phone is part of the same competitive battle for a world-dominating smartphone.
How will the Xperia X2 stack up against the competition? It depends on what you want in a phone and what you’re looking for. The last few weeks have focused on powerful mobile devices for the business professional. The Xperia X2 opens the competition a bit wider with a few noteworthy features.
First, the phone has a fat camera—8.1 megapixels worth of camera. The camera doubles as a camcorder. In addition to boasting tons of megapixels, the camera gives you autofocus, a handy touchfocus (like your conventional digital camera), image stabilizer (like the pricier DSLR cameras), flash, and even geotagging. Wow. Why don’t we call it a camera with a phone, rather than a phone with a camera?
Second, this phone is paneled. For those who are not familiar with ‘panels,’ it’s a Sony thing. Panels are their form of utilizing various apps or widgets. By moving through and customizing the phone’s panel interface, you can access the various apps that you choose to install on your phone. For iPhone users accustomed to an icon-packed mainscreen with scrolling horizontally for additional screens, the panel idea takes a bit of getting used to, but Sony Ericsson fans consider it the only way to use a smartphone.
Third, the phone is a great multimedia experience. The screen has enough real estate (480 x 800) to make squinting at small video unnecessary. Beyond that, the stereo Bluetooth and built-in stereo speakers make music-listening an unforgettable experience. The phone is also one of only a few to boast 3D games with motion gaming. Since it is installed with Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow arena, the phone beckons you to load up on music, games, themes, and movies.
On the downside, the phone is bulky and heavy. It’s going to make your sports jacket pocket feel like it has a small brick inside it, for indeed it does. Beyond that, there is not much on-board storage for the device. Although it’s expandable with a MicroSD slot, the 110 MB of internal memory isn’t going to hold a lot of those 8.1 MP pictures you take of your kids. The hard tap feel of the touchscreen bothers some who are used to a softer feel. Thankfully, the phone is equipped with a generously-sized qwerty keyboard, and that should spare your fingers while you tap out e-mails.
