Nokia’s Tube mobile phone
July 8, 2008 by Admin
Somewhat surprised by the success of the iPhone, Nokia mobile phones started a project in October last year. Until now, there have only been sketches and mockups, but at a developers’ conference, Nokia showed off its attempts at a touch device, called the “Tube”.
The phone, which doesn’t yet have a final name, is equipped with a compact 3.5-inch 16.9 touchscreen and uses a version of the Symbian operating system developed especially for touch control. In contrast to the iPhone, the Tube can be operated now only with a finger, but also with a stylus — this includes handwriting recognition. Thanks to a system of vibration feedback, users immediately know whether the mobile phone has perceived their touch.
Not just content to match Apple’s highly praised multi-touch gesture input system, the Tube will also support Quad-band networks and all the important connection standards, including GPRS, UMTS, Turbo HSDPA, and of course 802.11 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Additionally as an UPNP client, it can interface with your home network and play music or access other content from network storage devices. GPS navigation, as well as an auto-focus camera can be found onboard. The Tube is expected to arrive in markets in the first quarter of 2009, though the price is still unkown.. By then, Apple’s second-gernation iPhone should be available, and it could include features equal to the technological advantages promised by the new Nokia.
