New Sony eBook Reader

October 6, 2008 by Kirin Knapp

Sony will soon release a new eBook Reader, the PRS-700. It is certainly a step up from the previous models, with more speed, a touch screen and LED lighting. This new Reader will surely encourage more traffic and sales for The eBook Store by Sony, but will some buyers be discouraged?

In today’s world, new gadgets are almost always expected to have a multitude of features. A phone can’t just be a phone, it has to be a camera as well. Can the PRS-700 hold its own in the world of advanced gadgetry? There are upgrades from previous models, but there are some drawbacks as well. Though it was a sample model tested, there were a couple potential issues that may hinder its success.

The touchscreen may not be quick enough or sensitive enough when comparing it to today’s other electronics, like phones. But, do you really need an extraordinarily fast, high-tech device when you’re using it as a reader alone? How sensitive does it need to be? How many features should it have? Should it at least be back-lit?

Sony chose an interesting route with the lighting on this reader. It is built in, however it is LED lighting, side lit, and not the smoothest of illumination in the dark. Backlighting would create a much more fluid appearance (and maybe easier on the eyes), but that might have raised the already steep price of $400, which is probably the biggest deterrent.

The PRS-700’s predecessors are less expensive, and not really a step back in time from the newest model. Yes, they are older, but with few “high tech” advantages to new 700, you’re not too far off in technology, while saving a load of money.

Will it hold its own in today’s market?

Only time will tell, when it is officially released.
